Less than 100 Days To Ski Season

For our guests, Summer at Sipapu means a relaxing hike or ride, trout fishing the Rio Pueblo, friendly rounds disc golf and heaps of laid-back family time–all in the cool Sangre de Cristo mountains.

For our winter operations team, summer means just one thing: get ready for winter, which starts sooner than you think – we’re planning to Open November 22!  Lift and trail maintenance and snowmaking readiness are in full swing. While you soak in the last few weeks of summer, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at our ski season preparations.

All of our snow machines get a thorough inspection and diagnostics to make sure they will be working properly as soon as temperatures allow.

Sipapu can run around 20 snow machines during snowmaking and they can be a bit temperamental!

All heavy machinery is inspected and tested to make sure it is working properly. The tracks on these cats get worn out and need to be updated.

Once all the snow guns are ready,  they will be placed in strategic positions to maximize the coverage. To help facilitate this Sipapu has a large trail map drawing and magnets that represent each snow gun. This helps keep track of where the snow guns are placed and how the snow guns will move to new trails once enough snow has been made.

Right now, we’re doing a lot of testing to ensure all lifts will work properly when we open for winter operations. The reason we talk so much about lift maintenance is because it takes so much time, and is so critical to our success – and your good time! Right now, we’re about halfway through the work necessary for opening day.

New Mexico will open for skiing and snowboarding on November 22, 2019. Make sure you’re ready by grabbing your Season Passes before the first snow, so you’ll have first tracks.
